University of St Andrews CLV Albany Park

with Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson (HCD)

The new Albany Park Student complex occupies a unique position within the town. It is separate from the historic core physically but is adjacent to the conservation area and given its coastal location, occupies a visually prominent location from long-range views.

Atelier Ten have assisted with the master planning and site services strategy to create a distinctive development that makes provision for nine new buildings on the site principally for student resident accommodation with a separate new Facilities Building being provided for University common facilities, commercial events, student dining and social use.

To maintain the character of the coastal development, the existing Woodburn House will also be retained and refurbished as part of the accommodation provision, creating an overall delivery of 681 bedrooms across the site.

Atelier ten have worked closely with the key stakeholders to develop an environmental strategy that aligns with the University low carbon approach and requirements to produce low energy, healthy and vibrant buildings for all users. This has involved consideration of environmental engineering strategies, operational energy use, passive design systems, equipment selection and maintenance regimes.

Several low energy and low carbon design aspects have been incorporated into the design which has been developed on a fabric first approach based on enhanced U-values. Active measures include air source heat pumps, photovoltaics, low energy lighting and management and smart room control.

Delivery of heating and hot water demand across the site will be through a centralised energy centre which will provide a district heating solution to the site. The central plantroom will include provision for integration of a wider community-based heat network scheme which is being developed for the East Sands area of St Andrews.

Atelier Ten are also engaged on BREEAM to ensure the targeted Excellent rating is delivered.
