This project transforms a historic building in Los Angeles into a 21st century museum and theater with a design that marries art and technology. Atelier Ten worked with the team to create an environmentally friendly building that meets the art conservation standards of today.
The six-story complex restored the former Wiltshire May Company building located next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) campus. A new spherical glass structure designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Gensler expands the May Company building to house the state-of-the-art theater.
The museum includes a mixture of galleries, temporary exhibition spaces, event venues, and a small 144-seat theatre, which will screen experimental, independent and foreign films. The basement was converted into a living-storeroom to feature various items of movie paraphernalia, such as props, scripts and posters.
Atelier Ten worked with the design team to implement green building and operations measures to achieve LEED Gold.
