Lewis and Clark Landing at The RiverFront

with Gensler and OJB Landscape Architecture

The lighting design of the third phase of The RiverFront revitalization shapes the park into a safe, welcoming nighttime destination, where locals and visitors gather and revive previously underused spaces.

The design uses light to guide, highlight, and enhance without overwhelming, supporting daily activities from leisurely strolls to evening social events. To improve safety and occupant comfort, the lighting team concentrated on preserving visitors’ night vision by limiting glare, balancing light distribution, and controlling light level contrast. Throughout the park, large multilevel playgrounds are carefully illuminated to allow visitors to enjoy them well into the night.

In the volleyball court, custom shade structures offer shade in bright sun and diffuse lighting at night. Atelier Ten worked with manufacturers to re-engineer standard area lights with custom integral honeycomb louvers to maintain wide light distribution while blocking light from pedestrians’ eyes.
