Atelier Ten led the design team through the Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG) and ILFI Zero Carbon certification processes to create an elevated waterfront esplanade featuring a zero-carbon pavilion.
To align with Batter Park City Authority’s ambitious environmental and community goals, Atelier Ten facilitated visioning workshops and benchmarking assessments, establishing a framework focused on resilience, ecology, accessibility, and carbon reduction. This informed key design strategies including an integrated flood barrier, low-carbon concrete, stormwater capture and reuse, salvaged materials, heat-reflective paving, dark sky-compliant solar lighting, four ecological zones with native plantings, efficient irrigation reducing water use by over 30%, and an educational marine habitat.
Collaborating closely with the design team, Atelier Ten conducted detailed analyses of thermal comfort, daylight, embodied carbon, and indoor air quality to enhance occupant well-being for the pavilion. The final design incorporates recycled materials, LED lighting, high-performance glazing, and robust insulation—resulting in an efficient, resilient civic structure that serves the community while minimizing environmental impact.
