The Duke High Performance Building Framework established green building standards that align with Duke’s aggressive sustainability goals and embrace the unique challenges and synergies associated with sustainable building design in Durham, North Carolina.
Atelier Ten developed a rigorous sustainable design standard and tracking system to review performance for all of Duke’s new buildings and major renovations. The High Performance Building Framework outlines an improved process for planning and designing campus buildings, with a holistic view of green buildings.
Atelier Ten reviewed and evaluated existing university sustainability commitments to increase the focus on Duke University’s priorities: energy and water conservation.
Atelier Ten helped guide design decisions to meet their goal of carbon neutrality by 2024 and analyzed systemic changes in campus energy supply and distribution infrastructure. The framework addresses all aspects of sustainable building design, construction, and operations, with a focus on reducing energy use and potable water consumption. Also included within the standard are prescriptive and performance-based requirements related to site and landscape, occupant comfort and health, materials and construction.
