Suitland Collections Center Masterplan

Atelier Ten evaluated the benefits and performance of environmental design strategies for the Suitland Collections Center facilities, establishing a framework that meets current mandates while advancing long-term sustainability and resilience.

Atelier Ten developed a passive design approach that combines well-insulated, high-performance enclosures with collection zoning based on space-conditioning requirements. This approach reduces energy use while maintaining the precise environmental conditions required for collections care. Additionally, the team evaluated an an all-electric heating and cooling system including ground source heat pumps and heat recovery chillers with thermal storage, in lieu of fossil fuel based heating systems.

To ensure resiliency, Atelier Ten recommended automatic generators, on-site photovoltaics, battery storage and water reuse systems. Across the site, green roofs, bioswales, retention ponds, porous paving, and rainwater harvesting will reduce heat-island effects, manage and treat runoff, and provide water for irrigation, flushing, and boiler make-up.
