Buchanan Masterplan

with Foster + Partners and Michael Laird Architects and New Practice

The aspiration of the Buchanan Galleries redevelopment is to replace the existing shopping centre with an exciting new mixed-use urban neighbourhood in the heart of Glasgow city centre. The transformation will blend fantastic shopping with places to work, live and play.

The vision is to transform the Galleries into a leading employment, retail, leisure, and cultural destination. The new Glasgow district will have a series of streets within clusters of flexible blocks, buildings and public spaces.

The Galleries Masterplan will:
• Be the catalyst for the regeneration of Glasgow City Centre.
• Deliver on multiple Glasgow City Council and Scottish Government priorities, planning policies and commitments.
• Increase activity and accessibility around the city centre’s key public transport hubs, promoting active travel and a sustainable transport modal shift.
• Provide the next generation of attractive sustainable workspaces.
• Support a range of uses including, shopping, leisure, civic spaces and housing.
• Have sustainability at the core of the design through pioneering new construction methods that enable sustainable operation.
• Make a strong contribution to the city townscape through the open and accessible extension of the Glasgow grid, providing thriving new public spaces, greening and new amenities for residents, visitors and workers alike and streets that are alive with possibility for everyone.
• Implement innovations that support the transition to a low-carbon world. Reducing the environmental and climate impact.
