The UHS patient tower highlights patient wellbeing and visual comfort. The addition to the UHS campus features an optimized façade that facilitates connection to place and enhanced biophilic design while reducing glare and solar radiation.
A major driver in the new patient tower was patient health, wellbeing and connection to place. Atelier Ten worked with the design team to study how architectural design could impact occupant visual comfort as well as access to daylight and views. Atelier Ten explored various facade and shading designs for the patient tower. The initial study lead to a reduced window to wall ratio and an envelope that minimizes visual discomfort and maximizes views out.
Atelier Ten worked closely with the MEP engineers to explore the possibility of reducing the size of mechanical systems to lower cost and energy use. The MEP approach resulted in a 20% energy cost savings over the ASHRAE 90.1 2007 baseline for LEED. In addition, Atelier Ten coordinated with the structural engineer and concrete supplier to achieve a 10% reduction in embodied carbon.
Atelier Ten also provided lighting design for the tower. The lighting design highlights the local San Antonio landscape and creates a calm, welcoming atmosphere. Atelier Ten developed integrated lighting concepts that promote healing and overall wellbeing. The lighting further supports the energy goals of the project through reduced lighting power density and advanced controls.
