Atelier Ten is providing environmental design services for Scape Waterloo, a proposed seven-storey co-living development at 224–234 Young Street in Waterloo. The approved scheme will provide 283 homes alongside ground-floor retail, shared resident spaces, landscaping and new public spaces.

Atelier Ten developed the sustainability strategy supporting the project’s planning response and targeted 4 Star Green Star Buildings rating. The work brought together energy analysis, façade performance, upfront carbon and climate resilience, giving the project team a clear basis for sustainability decisions.

Multiparameter modelling tested up to 10,000 façade combinations to understand how glazing, insulation, window area and external shading affected energy use, thermal comfort, daylight and National Construction Code compliance. The study established parameters for window-to-wall ratios and orientation-specific façade treatments.

The energy strategy prioritised passive design and efficient building systems within an all-electric development, supported by proposed rooftop solar and renewable electricity procurement. Atelier Ten also prepared an initial upfront carbon estimate and opportunity register, allowing the project team to compare the carbon implications of different design and material choices.

The process identified more than 20 opportunities across the structure, façade, interiors and building services. These included greater structural efficiency, lower-carbon concrete and steel, fewer applied finishes and prefabricated elements where suitable.

Climate resilience testing considered projected conditions for 2050 and 2090, including flooding, urban heat and disruption to electricity supply. The assessment informed flood protection for habitable areas, backup power for critical systems and provision for battery storage. Green roofs, locally endemic planting, rooftop gardens and rainwater collection further supported biodiversity, water efficiency and resident amenity.

Scape Waterloo demonstrates how environmental design can steer key decisions before construction, establishing a practical pathway for lower-carbon operation and long-term resilience.
