NYC DDC Far Rockaway Branch, Queens Library

with Snohetta

The Far Rockaway Library serves as a gathering space and resource for the diverse and dynamic community of Queens, NY. Atelier Ten’s daylight design works in tandem with the library’s open plan, offering views to the surrounding neighborhood and creating a sense of connection to the outside.

The library’s façade features custom panels designed by Brooklyn-based contemporary artist Jose Parlá that reflect the rich cultural history of the community it serves. Atelier Ten worked closely with Snohetta to optimize the glazing of the facades to ensure visual comfort and access to views
without the need for internal shades. Atelier Ten also optimized the atrium skylight size to ensure the interior spaces are sufficiently illuminated.

Atelier Ten worked with the team to ensure the project meets local New York sustainability requirements while also
integrating high performance building systems with an emphasis on creating a comfortable indoor environment for the community. Atelier Ten’s energy model indicate 54.8% site energy savings and 34.8% energy cost savings over an ASHRAE 90.1-2010.
