Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center achieves LEED Silver
Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC) in Bowling Green, KY achieves LEED Silver certification. Working closely with the Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture team, Atelier Ten provided Lighting Design and LEED Program Administration services to enhance the environmental quality and sustainability of the project. Serving the local community, regional arts groups, and traveling and national performances, this new facility includes a flexible 1,800-seat proscenium theater, support spaces, a gallery, and a multi-purpose room for community functions to accommodate music, theater, dance rehearsals and events. Enhancing the indoor environmental quality of these spaces was a priority for the team, who integrated environmental strategies to provide occupant controllability, visual and acoustic comfort, and views to the exterior.
For the soaring lobby atrium, Atelier Ten worked closely with the design team to optimize the daylighting while also providing an exuberant lighting design that enhances the sense of spaciousness.
Supporting the project goal to achieve LEED Silver certification, Atelier Ten provided benchmarking guidance to ensure the project would meet this target. The building HVAC systems were designed to optimize performance and conserve energy, which was deemed particularly important in a facility that has infrequent use, but large energy demands. A high-performance envelope, efficient systems, and low-energy lighting contribute to the projected 31% energy cost savings, compared to an ASHRAE 90.1-2004 compliant building.
Atelier Ten’s team includes Director, Mark Loeffler and Senior Environmental Designer, Marta Bouchard from the New Haven office.
