The Dunard Centre

with David Chipperfield Architects

Atelier Ten are working with IMPACT Scotland and the design team to deliver a 1,000-seat purpose-built music venue home to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra located within Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage Site behind Dundas House on St Andrew Square, Edinburgh. This iconic venue will host classical, pop, rock, jazz and electronica concerts and will be open both day and night and will have a public café.

The Dunard Centre will sit behind Dundas House, 36 St Andrew Square, the beautiful home of Sir Lawerence Dundas which became part of the Royal Bank of Scotland estate in 1825. The Centre will make a striking contribution to the revitalisation of the city centre linking the New Town with the St James redevelopment, Multrees Walk and the Register Lanes area.

The building design takes a fabric first approach adopting an all-electric solution for the building services with air source heat pumps providing low carbon heating and cooling. Heat recovery ventilation is incorporated throughout the venue to maintain good air quality and a healthy, enjoyable internal environment that will enhance the wellness of its visitors.

Atelier Ten worked closely with David Chipperfield Architects and Nagata Acoustics to ensure the building services design is sensitive to the auditorium’s stringent acoustic conditions. The Auditorium is therefore served by an ultra-low noise ventilation system that provides conditioned air via a low velocity displacement under seating ventilation system.
