Redfern Place

with Architecture AND and Hayball and Silvester Fuller

Redfern Place is a major mixed-use renewal project in inner Sydney. Located on Gadigal land, this full-block precinct will transform a disused community centre into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood with around 350 new apartments. These homes will include social, affordable, market-sale and specialist disability housing, alongside community infrastructure, commercial spaces and shared green spaces.

Atelier Ten was engaged from the outset to lead the sustainability strategy for the precinct. Working closely with the client and design team, we helped define a shared vision shaped by affordability, resilience, circularity, care for Country and connection to place. This work established a clear sustainability framework to guide planning and design decisions as the project progressed.
Redfern Place is targeting a 5 Star Green Star rating. The approach includes an all electric, fossil fuel free operation model, passive design principles and rooftop solar, alongside broader social value initiatives including shared communal spaces and local employment outcomes.
Atelier Ten modelled building services and PV systems to support NABERS commercial benchmarks, incorporating efficient HVAC, heat pump hot water, LED lighting and on-site solar generation to reduce grid demand and emissions.
At the planning stage, all residential buildings are designed to exceed BASIX minimums, with Energy targets above 62% and Water targets above 40%. To support sustainable operations, the design has adopted high-performance facades, water saving fixtures and shared all-electric hot water systems. NatHERS modelling indicates an average rating of 7 Stars or above, supported by insulation, shading, ceiling fans and window selection to improve comfort and reduce reliance on mechanical systems.
Communal green roofs, rooftop gardens, shared kitchens and music rooms are incorporated into the design to support wellbeing, biodiversity and social connection. Redfern Place demonstrates how sustainability can be integrated into a diverse housing mix and a complex inner-city site, supporting long term liveability and improved running costs.
