Shruti Kasarekar discusses newly renovated SFMOMA

“Optimize, optimize, optimize became the mantra.” Shruti Kasarekar says in her discussion of the iterative design process that Atelier Ten, Snøhetta, and SFMOMA engaged in for the renovation of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

The museum opens on May 14, 2016 and targets LEED Gold certification, just one of the stringent local and state green building ordinances that shaped the project. Requirements for effective art conservation and display were also major influences on the museum’s design. Atelier Ten worked closely with Snøhetta and the museum conservators to refine existing curatorial approaches to support the desired environment for art preservation, the visitor experience and reduced energy use.
