New York Public Library – Midtown Manhattan Library

with Beyer Blinder Belle and Mecanoo

A department store turned library, the renovation of the Mid- Manhattan library branch uses daylight to welcome returning patrons and create an inviting children’s library. Atelier Ten led the daylight design and benchmarking to transform the library into a vibrant and public space.

Occupant comfort is critical in libraries to create spaces that are enjoyable for building users to work and spend time in. Atelier Ten studied the daylight availability of the existing building given the surrounding dense high-rise urban context and developed strategies to optimize daylight. High reflective ceilings and floors distribute light deeper into the space especially for the darker ground floor and basement level.
Atelier Ten determined the north end of the roof was an optimal location for a green roof as it receives the most sun. By moving the mechanical equipment into the “Wizard’s Hat,” the top floor gave way for NYC’s only public rooftop with green space.
