Mind Brain Behavior Institute Breaks Ground

Columbia University’s Mind Brain Behavior (MBB) Institute is the first of 15 new buildings on the 17-acre Manhattanville Campus to begin construction. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the 450,000-square-foot laboratory building is scheduled to open in 2016.

Atelier Ten worked closely with Renzo Piano Building Workshop to define and achieve ambitious environmental aspirations for the Mind Brain Behavior Institute. Atelier Ten guided the design of a high-performance façade that meets high environmental and acoustic requirements and worked closely with the engineers to increase energy savings through optimized laboratory ventilation rates and innovative conditioning strategies.

Director Nico Kienzl  and Associate Wendy Meguro from Atelier Ten’s New York office, and Claire Maxfield from the San Francisco office, worked on this project to provide environmental design, energy analysis, and LEED administration.
