Block 2 renewal, Parliament Hill, Ottawa – Schematic design milestone

The renewal of Block 2 on Parliament Hill in Ottawa has reached a key milestone, with the National Capital Commission’s Board of Directors approving the 50% schematic design.

Led by David Chipperfield Architects and Zeidler Architecture, the winning design was selected in May 2022 following an international competition. The project will transform a prominent site opposite the historic Centre Block into modern, sustainable accommodation for the Parliament of Canada, carefully integrating 19th and 20th century heritage buildings with new construction.

Atelier Ten has been providing sustainability consultancy in partnership with local firm Footprint, helping the design team address the complex challenge of uniting old and new fabric within a secure parliamentary campus. Our work focuses on embedding robust environmental strategies from the earliest stages, targeting long-term performance outcomes while protecting the site’s historic character.

Once complete, Block 2 will provide adaptable, low-carbon parliamentary offices and facilities designed to serve future generations. The next major milestone will be the completion of the Schematic Design and progression to Detailed Design anticipated in 2026.
