Planning Institute Australia (NSW)
Sustainability underpins two major NSW precincts recently recognised at the Planning Institute of Australia (NSW) Awards. The Broadmeadow Place Strategy and Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2050 both received commendations in the Strategic Planning Project category. Our sustainability work formed an important part of the evidence base that helped shape both master plans and the policies that sit behind them.
For Broadmeadow, the judges highlighted the strategy as the most significant urban renewal project undertaken in Greater Newcastle. It sets out a long-term plan for a 313-hectare growth area with capacity for new homes, jobs and a revitalised sport and entertainment hub. The commendation recognised the way the strategy responds to flooding and contamination constraints and coordinates growth and infrastructure planning while remaining grounded in Country. Atelier Ten’s role focused on making sustainability outcomes tangible at the precinct scale, translating ambitions around liveability, climate resilience and regeneration into performance criteria and tools that will inform planning controls and future decision making.
Led by SJB, the Sydney Olympic Park Master Plan 2050 was recognised as an exemplary strategic planning project and one of the most significant and detailed master plans in NSW. It provides a visionary and innovative framework for transforming the precinct into Sydney’s Beating Green Heart. The project seeks to balance the demand for urban development with the protection of significant ecological and natural resources, enhance connectivity through active and sustainable transport, and respond to the housing crisis with diverse and affordable housing options. Atelier Ten worked with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and the wider team to develop strategies aligned to a carbon positive precinct that will nurture a healthy, inclusive and connected community, supported by circular economy systems and water sensitive urban design.
Across both projects, Atelier Ten’s contribution has been to help bridge the gap between ambition and delivery: turning design aspirations into measurable targets, policy settings and implementation pathways that can be used by planners, designers, decision makers and communities over the next decade.
We congratulate the City of Newcastle, Sydney Olympic Park Authority and everyone recognised in this year’s PIA NSW Awards. We truly value the opportunity to support strategic planning projects that align long term growth with climate resilience, environmental stewardship and community outcomes.
