Associate Director Electrical, Glasgow and Edinburgh

Atelier Ten are recruiting for full-time Associate Directors – Electrical in our Glasgow and Edinburgh office.

About the role

You’ll demonstrate an interest in how electrical engineering fits with Atelier Ten’s approach. You’ll be committed to the development of high-quality, high-performance and sustainable buildings via the appropriate technical standards, costs and programme, in accordance with the client brief. You’ll be responsible for leading and maintaining a range of projects and/or providing specialist knowledge to other projects/teams.

Using industry benchmarks and internal standards, you’ll ensure the timely delivery of considered and accurate project information. You’ll take lead responsibility for co-ordination between internal departments and external consultants as an experienced engineer. You’ll maintain awareness of overall project financial status, agreement and contractual relationships on projects while providing a point of contact between Atelier Ten and our clients/collaborators. You’ll be responsible for upholding the integrity of ISO 9001.

You’ll be expected to undertake some elements of business development, leveraging key contacts to secure new or additional work for Atelier Ten whenever possible. You’re encouraged to secure external speaking/CPD opportunities. You’ll manage project budgets and produce fee proposals that include additional services and fees in collaboration with a Director.

As an Associate Director, you’ll be directly responsible for leading and co-ordinating the internal efforts of junior staff across Atelier Ten to achieve engineered solutions within agreed time scales. You’ll be providing appropriate frameworks and tools. You’ll also be responsible for agreeing appropriate standards and co-ordinating delivery against these standards. You’ll be expected to maintain updated project overviews and be able to explain the status of relevant sections of a project at any point in time. You’ll also ensure junior/graduate engineers are given proper development goals and mentoring.

As a member of the engineering team, you’ll report to a Director and are expected to liaise with clients, architects and other members of the design team with clarity, confidence and authority.

About you

We’re looking for someone who has experience working in a fast-paced office environment with the ability to manage a high workload and multiple deadlines. You’re a strong independent worker able to work without supervision. You’re highly motivated and committed to CPD in all areas. In addition to possessing excellent design, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills, you’re comfortable working with colleagues on all levels. You’re able to manage a team efficiently and engage with them beyond a management level.

You demonstrate an awareness and understanding of other disciplines; you understand the importance of collaborative problem solving in a multi-disciplinary environment that extends to clients, architects and other design members beyond Atelier Ten. You’re able to prioritise and think strategically about timing and method of project information delivery and identify project resource requirements.

You’ll have a keen interest in sustainability, and an understanding of the built environment.

Necessary qualifications

To be considered, you should be able to demonstrate the following minimum qualifications:

  • Relevant professional qualification (CIBSE chartership, or other professional body)
  • Solid experience in electrical design
  • Considerable experience in successful project co-ordination and delivery within public and private sectors
  • Extensive practical knowledge of team project management
  • Complete understanding of contractual procedures
  • Extensive proven track record of engagement and negotiation with senior management and peers on projects
  • Extensive proven track record of engagement and influence with peers outside of formal management relationships
  • Extensive proven track record of commitment and effective implementation to consistent standards and metrics
  • Ability to understand and select appropriate frameworks/tools according to circumstance
  • Ability to prioritise and think strategically about timing and method of delivering project information
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective IT skills for generating material/data

Desired qualifications

The following is not required but will help your application stand out from the crowd:

  • Interest and knowledge of other engineering disciplines
  • Experience and knowledge of business development
  • Experience with sustainable design
