Environmental Design and LEED Coordination
A new executive office building for the PPL Corporation, the Plaza at PPL Center comprises five floors of office space and a two story energy trading floor all arranged around a central atrium. Completed as a fast track project on a commercial development budget, the building should earn a LEED Gold certification.
Extensive energy conservation measures include external bris soleil and canopies to reduce solar gain and glare. High performance glazing, insulated walls and a cool roof further reduce energy loads. An innovative ice storage system reduced chiller sizes by 40% over a comparable building, and ventilation energy recovery minimizes air conditioning energy use while maximizing outdoor air use. Water conservation measures include a vegetated roof to detain and filter stormwater, waterless urinals to reduce potable water consumption, and filters to remove debris and pollutants from site water runoff.
Inside, high indoor air quality is maintained by careful selection of low VOC finish materials. High recycled content and local materials are used extensively throughout.
