Expo, Living 2000 - Hannover
Wohnen 2000 is a new ultra low-energy housing development of 142 flats near the Hannover fair, in the new "Bebauung am Kronsberg" neighbourhood.
As a landmark environmental project for Expo 2000, Germany's biggest Millennium event, all buildings in the Bebauung am Kronsberg must achieve a maximum energy consumption of 50 kWh/m2/yr.
Wohnen 2000 accomplishes these strict energy targets by grouping apartments around a "Microclimate zone" at the heart of each of the four blocks. This zone minimises solar gain in summer, reduces heat losses in winter, and is used as a fresh air reservoir for the mechanical ventilation system in winter.
All of the apartments have heat recovery ventilation and water conservation systems and will be monitored as part of a research project.
