DECEMBER

- The LEED PLATINUM rating for the Yale Sculpture School Building was confirmed last week. The recently opened building at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, is the very model of innovation in both design and energy efficiency. Designed by Kieran Timberlake Associates with atelier ten, the sculpture school is our 5th project for the university and another step towards a sustainability campus.

- International Living Steel Competition. Our competition entry with Cartwright Pickard Architects has won the 2nd edition of this competition. The competition organisers Living Steel/Corus are determined to realise the project and have already approached several developers.

- Battery Park City Leads the Green Way Inside residential and commercial buildings, the Battery Park City Authority is holding developments in the neighborhood to high levels of environmental friendliness, making them meet LEED certification requirements. Catherine Nueva Espana, business director for the environmental design firm Atelier Ten talks to Evan Mantyk from The Epoch Times

NOVEMBER

- Spertus Institute opening. Chicago's rough-hewn cityscape, already studded with architectural jewels, has a sparkling new gem. It resembles an exquisitely cut diamond dropped into the great wall of stone that rises like a cliff across from Grant Park. Read article from the Chicago Tribune >

- Emilie Hagen, Environmental Designer at the atelier ten NY office wins first place in the National "Natural Talent 2007 Design Competition". Emilie's Team consisting of Anu Akkineni, Ryan Bizorek, Denis Blount, Emilie Hagen & Mia Tsiami, presented a design strategy titled "Reengaging the site through the kinetics of nature". - Battery Park City Leads the Green Way. Battery Park City Authority is holding developments in the neighborhood to high levels of environmental friendliness, making them meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requirements put forth by the U.S. Green Building Council. OCTOBER

- Atelier Ten New York - Adriana Lira, is one of three 2007 recipients of the Illuminating Engineering Society's Richard Kelly Grant Awards. The award ceremony will be held at 5:00 p.m. on 23 October 2007 at the Center for Light+Space in New York City. Adriana will be receiving an award for her research work on the physiological aspects of light and health.
The Richard Kelly Grant was established by the New York Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society in 1980. Originally conceived as a scholarship program and later opened to young persons working in lighting in North America, the Grant is administered by the New York Section under the auspices of the IESNA. The Grant recognizes and encourages creative thought and activity in the use of light. More >>

- Blue Ball Barn has received a 2007 AIA Philadelphia Award for Design.

- Solar Decathlon: Sam Mason, an environmental designer at Atelier Ten's New York office, is a participant in the annual Solar Decathlon sponsored by the US Department of Energy.
The Solar Decathlon joins 20 college and university teams in a competition to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered house.
Sam's team, from the University of Colorado at Boulder, has designed a house which provides architectural flexibility in the design of the building exterior shape and envelope system, avoiding the repetitiveness of conventional modular housing. In the UC Boulder team's design, the walls and roof of the house can take any form and use any construction material produced near the site and appropriate to the local climate.

SEPTEMBER

- The Blue Ball Barn by Wallace Roberts & Todd, has received the 2007 AIA Delaware Honor Award for Design - The highest level of award, acknowledging a project with distinctive character and outstanding merit - the "best of the best".
This is prize is an acknowledgment of the quality of the finished product and the achievement of our goal that the Blue Ball Barn restoration and adaptive reuse serve as a model for the successful integration of historic preservation with high performance sustainable design.

- Heatherwick Studio, leading a team that includes designer Casson Mann, structural engineer Adams Kara Taylor and Environmental engineer Atelier Ten has won the competition to design the UK pavilion for Shanghai Expo in 2010.

A jury chaired by Digby, Lord Jones of Birmingham, Trade and Investment Minister, and featuring leading figures from the British design and architectural community selected the design from a strong field of six short-listed designs.

The winning concept "a Pavilion of Ideas" creates a single, stunning enclosure clad in a mass of spines that hovers without apparent visible support above a public square. Each spine is tipped with a tiny coloured light source which can be programmed with a variety of images, colours and messages. The spines move freely in the breeze to create a living patterned façade. Its inner and outer surfaces can integrate presentations within the pavilion with ever changing messages and images on the outside. Using interactive technology, visitors will be invited to add ideas that can be used in real time to change the presentations.

- viva Mexico! The Museo del Acero in Monterrey, Mexico, has recently been named a Mexican National Monument by the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. This renovated steel furnace in the heart of the national Parque Fundidora was recently completed and is envisioned as a museum for the history of steel manufacturing in the region.

The new museum consists of a renovation and restoration of an existing steel furnace, and the addition of administrative, gallery, and multipurpose spaces. Atelier Ten's environmental design for the project focused on the design of the building envelope and the principal system selection.

- Columbia names atelier ten NY environmental consultant for proposed Manhattanville expansion. Atelier ten will help Columbia Universityset environmental performance goals for the proposed campus. In addition to assisting the University with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) consulting services, atelier ten will develop strategies for management and conservation of energy and water, as well as maintaining high air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. - Ithaca College commits to the environment with new Gateway Building.
College campuses across the country are taking strides toward sustainability in their efforts to be environmentally, socially and fiscally sound. Committed to building a sustainable future, Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y., developed a comprehensive sustainability initiative, linking environmentally responsible practices to all campus endeavors including academic programming, quality of campus life, technology and facilities. A significant physical outcome of this sustainability initiative is the ground breaking of its second LEED Platinum registered building in two years. Read more >>

- Building Enclosure Awards Program. atelier ten NY director Paul Stoller is part of the jury for the Boston Society of Architects' 2007 Building Enclosure Awards Program. The jury will announce the award in November at the Build Boston conference.

- Malone Engineering Center Pioneers Sustainability at Yale. The report "Malone Engineering Center Pioneers Sustainability at Yale" is now available on www.TradelineInc.com and another copy can be foiund at the IFMA website.

JULY

- WORLD MAMMOTH AND PERMAFROST MUSEUM.
Atelier Ten New York is a member of the competition team headed by Leeser Architecture that won the competition for World Mammoth and Permafrost Museum and Scientific Research Center in the Republic of Sakha-Yakutia, Siberia.
The building has been designed so the worlds of the museum and scientific research center can coexist without contamination. Leeser Architecture’s pioneering design creates a shelter for life within extreme surroundings, preserving the permafrost and fostering a comfortable learning, working and socializing environment. The structure is an architectural prototype for building in harsh climates and ecologically sensitive sites.

- SAVILL BUILDING MAKES IT INTO THE STIRLING PRIZE SHORTLIST 2007.
The building was designed by Glenn Howells Architects for The Crown Estate. Atelier ten was responsible for the building services and environmental engineering studies.
The building has already won a number of prizes including: RIBA Regional Award 2007, RIBA National Award 2007, Civic Trust Awards 2007, Timber Building of the Year.
The RIBA Stirling Prize is presented to the architects of the building which has been the most significant for the evolution of architecture in the past year. The RIBA Stirling Prize - winner will be announced October 2007

- EMERGING GREEN BUILDERS DESIGN COMPETITION
Atelier Ten New York staff members have participated in the Emerging Green Builders design competition in NYC. Emilie Hagen was a member of the team that won and Wendy Meguro participated with a team that received honorable mention.

JUNE

-"ATELIER TEN PARTICIPATES IN GOVERNORS ISLAND COMPETITION"
The New York office of Atelier Ten recently participated in a competition to design a 40-acre park area for Governors Island, a former federally-owned island near the tip of Manhattan. Ben Shepherd and Emilie Hagen of Atelier Ten teamed up with, respectively, Hargreaves Associates and REX on design proposals which included sustainability as a key component.
The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation will select a wining design in July. More in New York Times >>

- The Sackler Crossing is a recipient of the Paul Waterbury Awards for Outdoor Lighting Award of Distinction at this year’s International Illumination Design Awards (IIDA 2007).

- Easter Park at Beam Reach Our first wind turbine project has now been completed. Built by Easter Group located at Ferry Lane South, Rainham, Essex.

MAY

- Atelier Ten New York - Carbon Neutral Audit. We conducted an audit with the guidance of The CarbonNeutral Company to asses the net carbon emissions from Atelier Ten’s premises, business travel, deliveries and employee commuting. The CarbonNeutral Company quantified our emissions, verified findings with a third party, and set up Atelier Ten’s investment in offsetting projects to neutralize our emissions. Press Release >>

- Atelier Ten's new business school building for Ithaca College Business School, with Robert A.M Stern Architects, was the featured building in the 8 May 2007 issue of Architects' Newsaper.

- D&AD Global Awards (Design and Art Direction). The Virgin Lounge at Heathrow T3 picked up its 5th Award, this one for Outstanding Achievement in Environmental Design for Leisure and Tourism. D&DA homepage >

- An Approach to Sustainable Architecture for Office Buildings in Vietnam written by Viet Tuan Do, Environmental Designer at atelier ten's London office, received an International Award for Excellence from the International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability, in the field of environmental, cultural, economic and social sustainability in the Asia-Pacific area. Viet's paper describes the development of a design tool using at the early stages of architectural design for energy efficient commercial buildings in Vietnam. A Vietnamese version of the paper and the design tool itself will be launched soon in Vietnam which will be COMPLETELY FREE !

- The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia has this year given the Blue Ball Barn a Grand Jury Award in recognition of the projects successful adaptive re-use of an Agricultural building for public use.
The Awards will be presented at the annual awards Luncheon being held this Wednesday, may 2nd at the Crystal Tea Room in Center City Philadelphia (11 am reception 12 noon Awards Luncheon).

- THE SALLAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES SUSTAINABLE DESIGN SYMPOSIUM & EXHIBITION OF SUSTAINABLE SCULPTURES. Catherine Nueva Espana and Emilie Hagen from Atelier Ten will be part of the panel together with Nancy E. Anderson - The Sallan Foundation and Dinah A. Koehler - US EPA. The panel will explore successful strategies for making the lived-in environment more livable.
