- LITTLE BRITAIN CHALLENGE CUP.
atelier ten took part for second consecutive year in the Little Britain Challenge Cup – the largest yachting regatta in Europe. LBCC is an event for the construction and property industry which takes place every year since 1987 in Cowes, Island of Wight. We raced on Rangatira, a Class 2 IRC Racing boat. Apart from the skipper our crew was entirely made of a10 engineers and environmental designers, most had never race in a Regatta before. It was a great experience; you can see some photos here in our flickr gallery >>

Radical re-use embraces future-proof environment strategy
“Out of the Ashes” is about the dramatic reinvention of the massive and derelict former Imperial Tobacco HQ building on the outskirts of Bristol: Lake Shore.
Using proven methods, such as small-scale wind energy, photovoltaic installations and a ground-source heat pump, Lake Shore’s environmental systems will provide an estimated 80% of the building’s annual energy demand.
As opinion formers debate the environmental value of existing buildings and whether or not to retain them, the narrative to Lake Shore’s revival is a compelling one. The Corten and concrete-framed building, originally designed by SOM, has been recrafted with due reference to the original architect, who considered and approved the proposed reworking of the building from a dense office block into a living, breathing residential oasis with extensive and forward-thinking environmental credentials.

- atelier ten is collaborating with Foster and Partners on a concept Masterplan for a mixed-use development south of Dublin known as Greystones New Quarter, on the edge of Greystones Village and boarding the sea. The structure of the cluster 'villages' is inspired by Irelands’ ancient forms and landscape, and integrates a new public park and lake while encouraging access towards the seashore.
The project consists of residential, civic, educational, commercial and leisure facilities and embodies many environmental and social sustainability strategies. The proposal works with the natural resources on the site (sun, wind, earth and water) to minimise demand on external systems and reduce CO2 emissions.
atelier ten are proposing the use of earth energy to provide heating and cooling in mixed use areas in thearly phases. As the development grows the intention is to develop a Biomass CHP system fed from locally grown bio-fuel crops. Wind Energy is another very significant resource adjacent to the site, and the potential for wind energy systems will also be subject to detailed appraisal.

- The Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business received a Special Recognition commendation by the 2006 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Awards. The Associated General Contractors of America, who sponsors the award, recognized the project as an exemplar of efficient partnership in both design and construction.
atelier ten NY provided environmental design and LEED consulting services for its longtime collaborators, Robert A.M. Stern Architects (Associate Architects) and Bower Lewis Thrower Architects (Architect of Record). Smeal College, the largest academic building on the Penn State campus, houses all of the college's resources, including faculty offices, classrooms, laboratories, and a trading floor.

April
- The Business Instructional Facility at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will hold its groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, April 28, 2006. This landmark building, designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, combines environmental design principles with innovative, high-performance building systems.
The project will create a signature building for the University that sets a new benchmark for sustainable academic buildings in the United States. Starting with the feasibility study, the design team approached orientation, massing, façade design, and program allocation to create a compact and efficient building form while maximizing daylight and providing a sense of space. From the initial stages the design process has involved not only the complete AE team but also the UIUC facilities department in discussion about performance expectations and design boundary conditions. This collaborative process allowed a vested commitment by all participants and the integration of many design features early in the design process.
The Business Instructional Facility will consolidate into one new building the University’s undergraduate, graduate, accounting and MBA programs. The U-shaped facility will house classrooms, libraries, computer labs and an auditorium, clustered around a central atrium and courtyard. The arrangement of the rooms around the central atrium is intended to maximize daylight and natural ventilation, as well as to promote open and spontaneous interaction among students. Atelier Ten assisted the design team in the development of well-integrated and low-energy ventilating, conditioning, daylighting, and shading systems and in the selection of appropriate building materials and wall assemblies. Atelier Ten is currently overseeing documentation for LEED certification, with a goal of a Gold rating. The building will open in the fall of 2008.
March
- The Glass Debate: 23 March, 1 Great George Street, London SW1
The Glass Debate will look at the impact of the new Building Regulations and the constraints they are putting on design of ‘all glass’ buildings and how they meet the thermal insulation standards.
Patrick Bellew of atelier ten together will Sean Affleck from make architects will give a joint presentation that questions "what windows actually do?"
- Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew's Alpine House.
The Davies Alpine House opened to the public on 11 March 2006. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, structural engineers Dewhurst Macfarlane and atelier ten environmental designers & building services engineers. The cooling of the building is provided by a Labyrinth, a system akin to termite mounds, where cooler air is drawn in trough and underground chamber.
January
- At atelier ten we firmly believe that we all have a responsibility to the environment. Our business practices seek to consistently reflect this belief. To wrap up 2005 we have offset the Carbon Dioxide emissions resulting from our travels to and from meetings and projects all over the UK and the world by arranging for the planting of some 70 new trees in Roads Woodland in Buckinghamshire to offset the 34 Tonnes of Carbon we have generated.
If you want to offset your own carbon emissions go to www.futureforests.com and follow the simple instructions. Go on - give the environment a present!.
- Upcoming lecture: Going green in the USA? - Patrick Bellew will speak at the Ecobuild 2006 Conference, 14:20, 23rd February 2006.
