December - November 2004

- "The Plaza at PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has won the Urban Land Institute's "2004 Awards for Excellence." The international awards program, established in 1979, recognizes the full development process of a project, from architecture and design to construction and actual use of the property, and is widely considered the land use industry's most prestigious recognition program. Atelier Ten served as the environmental consultants for this project and were instrumental in defining the sustainability of the building."

- We have won a number of major competitions in the past two months:

---British Antarctic Survey new research station in Antarctica. Hopkins Architect's “walking building” demonstrated an innovative approach to relocating the structures. Our team was also praised for taking care in matching the sustainability requirements and how new materials can be introduced to Antarctica. This team comprised by Hopkins Architects, Expedition Engineers, DLE, RWDI and atelier ten, is one of 3 winning teams selected from 86 entries from around the world.

--- The competition for the new Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Science has also been won by Hopkins Architects in association with Atelier Ten and Arup. This 5500m2 faculty will be the home of the famous Yale Forestry school and will be one of the greenest buildings in the USA; a carbon neutral operating regime is the target.

--- The Museum of Bristol is planning a new £11M industrial museum on the waterfront to house their significant artefact collection with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund. The competition has been won by LAB Architecture Studio with Atelier Ten, Arup and Davis Langdon.

--- The major new secondary school in the Guilford Diocese will be designed by DSDHA and Atelier Ten with Adams Kara Taylor engineers and Davis Langdon. The school will be a 4FE Secondary school with an adjacent Special Needs school, the Pond Meadow School wich will relocate to the site for a September 2007 opening. The client group are looking for a highly sustainable, exemplar 21st century school building.

--- Another secondary school, Olrey School in Milton Keynes is in design following a competition win with architects Penoyre and Prasad.

- Atelier ten London together with architects, engineers and developers friends and clients celebrated a successful year 2004 and the number of exciting projects already in process for 2005. Our annual company party was held in the London Transport Museum, view pictures here >>. Atelier Ten NY held their client party Friday 3rd December.

October 2004

- Claire Johnson, Environmental Designer at Atelier Ten NY, has recently been published in the architecture journal "306090." This issue (Number 07: Landscape within Architecture), includes her article entitled "Negotiating the National Forests."

September 2004

- atelier ten advanced with KPF Associates, N.Y., to the final three in the competition for the renovation and extension of the National Museum of China at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Read more >>

- The RIBA awards were handed out in the very sweaty surroundings of the Trumans Brewery in Brick Lane. atelier ten collaborated with the design of two winning schemes:

::Arco Building - Keble College with Rick Mather Architects.

-The Plaza at PPL Center was named on of the AIA's Top Ten Green Buildings for 2004.

MIES VAN der ROHE's CROWN HALL RENOVATIONS

We are working with the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago on the renovation of Mies Van der Rohe's S R Crown Hall.
A recent article in Building Design detailed the work that we have been undertaking in collaboration with Transsolar Energietechnik of Stuttgart and New York.

NEW BUSINESS SCHOOL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

We have recently been appointed to work with the New York office of Cesar Pelli Architects on the environmental design of a new business school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The university is setting high Environmental targets for the project and is targeting a high silver rating under the US Green Building Council's LEED initiative.

NEW GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM

The new Grand Rapids Art Museum, the construction of which will begin during 2004 will have an extensive glass integrated photovoltaic array built into the roof structure.
The PV's will generate up to 80KW of electrical power in full sunshine. Funding for this initiative is being provided by the Wege Foundation.
Architects are Munkenbeck and Marshall.

HARTLEY LIBRARY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON

The new extension to the Hartley Library at the University of Southampton with Wilson Mason Architects is nearing completion.
As well as housing increased areas for study and book storage, the building contains a significant area of archive housing the Mountbatten Collection along with secure workshops and study spaces. The archive areas are all provided with close-control conditioning systems while the library is conditioned using the Termodeck Slab conditioning system.

atelier ten New York have recently finished a new flagship store for Apple Computers in Tokyo where they have been employed as environmental consultants to advise on the design of the double skin curtain wall construction.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CHINA

atelier ten advanced with Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, New York, to the final three in the competition for the renovation and extension of the National Museum of China at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The design for this 1.8m square foot museum complex includes glass pavilions with advanced double-skin facades as well as innovative museum conditioning strategies to provide a high performance scheme for this state-of-the-art museum environment. THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM IN OXFORD

The oldest public museum in the world, has won lottery funding approval for an extension that will increase exhibition space and provide the first education spaces of the building. atelier ten is responsible for the full scope of environmental and buildings services plus lighting design. Architecture project by Rick Mather Architects.

ALPINE HOUSE

The new Alpine House for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is now starting on site. Wilkinson Eyre Architects’ single glazed building, allows for the maximum penetration of sunlight and integrates a shallow labyrinth designed by atelier ten.

BERMONDSEY SQUARE REGENERATION

Urban Catalyst's Bermondsey Square project a mixed used development including a hotel, a market place, office, retail and residential buildings, was given the go ahead after obtaining detailed Planning Permission. atelier ten designed the full specs for an environmentally driven building services system. There are a number of strong sustainability themes running through all aspects of the project, as the target of 70% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to a conventional building solution, which lead to the use of a CHP system (combined heat and power). The scheme is targeting a BREEAM 2003 Excellent rating. The architects of the project are Munkenbeck + Marshall

HARVARD - ALLSTON NEIGHBORHOOD MASTERPLAN

Atelier Ten has been selected to be the sustainable design consultant for the development of a Masterplan of the campus expansion in the Allston neighborhood of Boston. Guided by architects Cooper, Robertson & Partners and Gehry Partners, the project team will plan the development of over 10m sq ft of new Harvard buildings, including undergraduate residential housing, science laboratories, and new homes for the School of Public Health and the School of Education.
