The Thames Gateway Forum 2007:
- Towards a carbon-, waste- and water-neutral Gateway: Carbon is only one measure of sustainability - and achieving a step change in the environmental impact of the built environment needs a more holistic, fully integrated approach to energy, waste and water. This session takes a practical look at how the Gateway sets off down the path towards carbon, waste and water neutrality and weighs up the costs, benefits and returns, separating the achievable from the aspirational.

May 6. Atelier Ten’s John An presents on daylight and glare control.
John will speak at Lightfair International’s Lightfair Daylighting Institute held at the Javits Convention Center. John’s presentation will address the challenge of glare in daylight design and how effective daylighting design requires glare analysis and control. John will explain the conceptual foundations behind the Annual Glare Potential Method, a methodology that enables view-independent, time-independent evaluation of glare conditions in a space over the course of one year. May 14-16. Atelier Ten’s Anne Nicklin speaking at The 2007 Building Materials Reuse Association Conference.
Anne Nicklin will be a featured speaker at this year’s Building Materials Reuse Association Conference on Deconstruction, Building Materials Reuse, and C&D Recycling. Held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison May 14-16, BMRA’s Deconstruction Conference is an international event serving to advance building materials reuse, and construction and demolition recycling to encourage an industry-wide transformation in resource conservation through buildings’ entire life cycle. Anne will highlight four Atelier Ten case studies at Yale University which mark the progression of landfill waste diversion, from basic C&D recycling, to increased recycling rates, to the eventual goal of achieving full resource reuse. Atelier Ten’s Mark Loeffler on 'This Old House'
Mark Loeffler was the sustainable lighting designer for This Old House’s first "green home" renovation. Located in Hyde Park in Austin, TX, the owners sought to renovate their 1926 craftsman bungalow while using environmentally friendly building products and optimizing the house for energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Working with the design team and owners, Mark designed a visually appealing, low-energy lighting plan which included compact fluorescents, custom fixtures and LEDs. Mark and the team included emerging technologies, such as dimmable compact fluorescents and warm-white architectural lighting, which is not yet commonly available for the consumer market. Additionally, Mark addressed the house’s long-term sustainability by using a local fabricator’s custom decorative fixtures to minimize embodied energy associated with manufacturing, packaging, and transport, as well as installing Edison screw sockets to enable continued experimentation with new lamps and technologies for further energy efficiency in the future.
Mark’s contributions to the renovation are featured in episodes 2623 and 2626 of This Old House’s TV series, and his article 'A Green, Well-Lighted Place: How to choose energy saving lighting for an eco-friendly house' is available at www.thisoldhouse.com in the Electrical and Lighting section.
