Recent NewsJULYRIBA Sterling Prize Shortlist We have been involved in two of the six buildings nominated for this year's Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize. The shortlist, described as "unique" in the award's history, sees two UK schools up against museums in Oxford, Rome and Berlin. Atelier ten provided a full design service for both, Christ's College School in Guildford, Surrey and on the extension to Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The old 70s buildings suffered arson attacks and there were problems with graffiti and discipline, but seven years on the school in Guildford has been transformed and now has a waiting list. Building Design > South Korean Eden Project. Grimshaw has unveiled plans for a National Ecology Centre in South Korea, reminiscent of the Eden Project. The practice is collaborating with local firm Samoo Architects and other firms including Atelier Ten, to create the 33,000sq m “Ecorium” landmark, which is in Seocheon Province. Download article from Yatching World > Eco-Tower for east London. Studio RHE has submitted plans to build a 24-storey eco-tower in Newham, east London. The proposed tower, dubbed SilverTree, will be built on a brownfield site at the Royal Victoria Dock. An energy efficiency and sustainability study carried out by Atelier Ten states that the building should achieve a Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) Level 4 and a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating. Read more > Emma Marchant, Senior Environmental Designer at our London office, joined the judging panel for the Surface-to-Air Event ‘Design my learning space – Live” at the BSEC Conference on 24th February. Ten local school groups, joined by ten young architects worked up innovative and thought-provoking proposals to meet a series of real briefs set by primary and secondary schools to address a range of the current challenges in education. The teams used mixed media to explore their ideas generating colourful sketches and dynamic models as well as using interactive whiteboards. The winning school was awarded £1,000 of IT equipment courtesy of Smart Technologies. The LEED Silver Gary Comer Lab at Columbia is the first LEED certified building on Columbia's campus! Christopher Gray visits the theatre building site, as it nears completion. Read on > Atelier Ten are working with Ridge and Partners LLP on the construction of a new Lecture Theatre for Merton College, Oxford. Due to open in the Summer of 2010, the building has just achieved a BREEAM score of 70.50% and an Excellent rating due in part to a highly efficient adiabatic ventilation system and a strategy of displacement ventilation in the theatre. Atelier Ten played a significant role in this endeavor by designing a lighting scheme for the building that uses less than .54 watts per square foot. Museo del Acero Horno3 in Monterrey, Mexico receives recognition from the American Society for Landscape architects for its innovative and environmentally integrated landscape design.
