Himalayan Light Foundation
Chad Groshart, from our New Haven Lighting Studio, recently ventured to rural Nepal to install photovoltaic lighting systems in several schools for the Himalayan Light Foundation, with support from Atelier Ten as its first philanthropic funding initiative.

Living in villages with no electricity or running water, Chad developed a better understanding of electric lighting as a precious resource. “During the time that I was installing the solar-powered lighting systems, I observed how the rhythms of the days are shaped when there is very little controllable lighting.” Chad said “Light is a privilege in this emerging nation and not to be taken for granted as it is in the West. The people of Nepal live sustainably in part out of necessity, but also out of a sense of reverence for nature. The basic concepts of low-energy lighting as it exists in rural Nepal should inform how we approach lighting in the modern world.”

That is certainly true, but in the broadest terms, a high-performance school is designed to minimize reliance on fossil fuels- and provide a comfortable, healthful, productive and beautiful learning environment -by optimizing the efficiency of the building form and mechanical equipment.
