A panel discussion with Mark DuBois, James O'Callaghan, Marc Simmons, Michael Steinhuelb, and Paul Stoller Moderated by Nat Oppenheimer. Was the past ten years of dramatic advances in glass technology and design simply a function of the overheated economy or an invaluable leap forward in the more natural evolution of glass design? Will designers continue to innovate with every new design and reset the paradigm with each new project? Or will they take the most recent advances and work to make them more efficient, more easily deployable, and more accessible? Will glass be seen as the cornerstone of a fully embraced move towards high performance design? Click here for further information > JANUARY 28thThe Present and Future State of Green Lighting. More info >> Atelier Ten’s Mark Loeffler on 'This Old House' Mark Loeffler was the sustainable lighting designer for This Old House’s first "green home" renovation. Located in Hyde Park in Austin, TX, the owners sought to renovate their 1926 craftsman bungalow while using environmentally friendly building products and optimizing the house for energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Working with the design team and owners, Mark designed a visually appealing, low-energy lighting plan which included compact fluorescents, custom fixtures and LEDs. Mark and the team included emerging technologies, such as dimmable compact fluorescents and warm-white architectural lighting, which is not yet commonly available for the consumer market. Additionally, Mark addressed the house’s long-term sustainability by using a local fabricator’s custom decorative fixtures to minimize embodied energy associated with manufacturing, packaging, and transport, as well as installing Edison screw sockets to enable continued experimentation with new lamps and technologies for further energy efficiency in the future. Mark’s contributions to the renovation are featured in episodes 2623 and 2626 of This Old House’s TV series, and his article 'A Green, Well-Lighted Place: How to choose energy saving lighting for an eco-friendly house' is available at www.thisoldhouse.com in the Electrical and Lighting section.
