2014 AIANY COTE Proof + Beauty Honor Award

The LEED Platinum Kohler Environmental Center at Choate Rosemary Hall wins the Honor Award in the first annual AIA New York Chapter Committee on the Environment (COTE) Proof + Beauty Awards.

As one of the three submissions selected from projects located within a 100-mile radius of Central Park in New York City, the project is an example of positive impact on the built environment. Atelier Ten collaborated with Robert A.M. Stern Architects and helped shape the environmental center into a model of sustainable and energy efficient design. The passively designed building includes high-performance wall assemblies that approach Passive House standards, a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system, an earth duct to pre-temper outdoor air, a solar hot water system, and a waste oil boiler using cooking oil or biofuel to heat the greenhouse.  These strategies reduce the building’s energy use by 53% and a photovoltaic system adjacent to the building provides the remaining energy to achieve net zero.

Atelier Ten New York provided Environmental Design, Energy Analysis, and LEED Administration. The team included Paul Stoller, Emilie Hagen, and Bret Mantyk. Atelier Ten New Haven provided Lighting Design services. The team included Chad Groshart and Gus Sanchez.
